Where Did the Hoop Earring Originate?

By Kate Brown

"Mom, where do hoop earrings come from?"

Probably not a question parents get asked very often, but we are extremely curious as to where these beauties originally came from. According to this New York Times article "hoop earrings originated in Africa, dating back to Nubia, a civilization that existed in the fourth century in what is now present day Sudan, according to Yekaterina Barbash, associate curator of Egyptian art at the Brooklyn Museum".

Remember Cleopatra? Well this chic Egyptian goddess was notorious for wearing hoops along with other Egyptian royalty like Nefertiti and Tutankhamen. Barbash also said that Egyptians wore these as an expression of beauty and sexuality.

So how have hoops evolved over time? Let's take a look!

Cher Hoops

First things first, OKAY CHER!! Hasn't aged a day quite frankly. But we're digging those 70's hoops. We have to wonder how heavy they were though...?

Rest in peace to a Rock & Roll legend and clearly a hoop trendsetter! While we might not be into hoops THIS big, we're loving that they've been apart of the music scene for decades.

JLo Hoops

THE QUEEN HAS SPOKEN. If JLo wears hoops, then the rest of us should get with the program.
