Can pregnancy cause a metal allergy?

Why Do My Ears Hurt After Pregnancy?

By Jessica Burke

Pregnancy can cause some people to develop new allergies to various things. One of which being metals, including nickel. The reason why you may get allergies after pregnancy is due to the hormonal fluctuations in your body. The estrogen and progesterone have an impact on your mast cells, which are responsible for allergic reactions.

New allergies can surface during all periods of significant hormonal change, including pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause. Symptoms of nickel allergy include rash or bumps on the skin, itching, redness or changes in skin color, dry patches of skin, or even blisters and draining fluid in severe cases.

Pregnancy can be the reason you can no longer wear your old favorite pair of earrings, but this does not have to stop you from wearing jewelry at all!  It is quite common to develop allergies after pregnancy, and we need to adapt how we search for our jewelry.

Pure metals, such as 24K gold, sterling silver, Many of these metals can be costly and have limited styles. Metals that work for some, like Surgical-grade stainless steel may still contain some traces of nickel, which can cause allergies for some sensitive ear earrings after pregnancy.

We love titanium earrings to wear during and after pregnancy as it is non-reactive and can be worn by even the most sensitive skin. By eliminating all other metals, we have taken the guesswork out of finding earrings that are safe. Please remember to always wash your hands before handling your jewelry and if you have any medical concerns at all to contact your healthcare provider.
