Sensitive ears are actually an allergic reaction to one or multiples metals in your earrings. Contact metal allergies develop over time and with regular contact with a reactive material. Most metals are very reactive and with enough close contact (like when you are wearing earrings) your body will eventually build up a tolerance to those metals and react when they are present. Contact metal allergy symptoms include swelling, itching, soreness, redness, and even blistering or bleeding. These symptoms occur when the metal is present and go away when the metal is removed.
Misconceptions

- Sensitive ears are caused by metal allergies
- Nickel is a common metal allergy, but there are other metals like gold, copper, chromium, and cobalt that cause allergies as well
- If you have sensitive ears, seek out earrings made with pure, non-reactive metals like titanium, niobium, and platinum
- Ignore labels like "hypoallergenic earrings" or "nickel free earrings" and just look at the metals that are in the earrings (just like you would look at the ingredient list for a food allergy)
